#1 Spankys Gourmet Grub/ Jernick’s Specialities
Spankys is relatively new to Nutley. However, if you want a great burger, their Bacon Me Crazy Burger is to die for (see the one below with added Mac and cheese).
They started out being a well known food truck and now they have their own location right in the center of town. Here’s the burgers you have to choose from:
- Bacon Me Crazy Burger: Beef-Bacon patty, bacon jam, caramelized onions, cheese skirt, pickles, tomatoes, lettuce, onion straws.
- Bacon Me Crazy Burger (Food Truck Style): Beef / Bacon patty, bacon jam, caramelized onions, cheese skirt.
- Jersey Burger: Blended beef patty, Taylor ham, American cheese, salt/pepper/ketchup.
- Raider Burger: Smashed beef patty, American cheese, lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, special sauce.
- The Raider Challenge!: Five stacked patties, 1 pound of fries (any style). Customers have 15 minutes to finish the entire meal.
Overall Review
My experience at Spanky’s was a great one. When I walked in the first thing I noticed was the cool sports memorabilia on the walls. There were a few people in front of me but because of the quick and friendly service, I was able to order my Bacon Me Crazy Burger and be on my way in no time.
The burger was cooked perfectly and was the perfect balance of ingredients.
I will definitely be back to try the other burgers, sandwiches and more, but when it came to the burger it was an easy 9.5 out of 10.

#2 Nutley Diner
There are actually two different burgers I frequently get from the Nutley Diner, The first one is the burger Deluxe. The burger’s large size and combination of three melted cheeses (American, Swiss, and Cheddar) are what make it the second best burger in Nutley (in my opinion).
Burger Deluxe Rating: 9/10
The second burger is called the smoke house burger. This burger is topped with Cheddar Cheese, Bacon, Haystack Onions, and BBQ Ranch Sauce. If you’re in the mood for a little more flavor, this might just be the burger for you!

#3 Cowan’s Public
Cowan’s public is a place known for great food and great cocktails. Their burgers are no exception. Here are the options the burgers you have to choose from:
- Classic Cheese Burger
- Ingredients: lettuce, tomato, onion, roasted garlic aioli
- Cowan’s Bacon Burger
- Ingredients: havarti, lettuce, caramelized onions, horseradish aioli
- Veggie Burger
- Ingredients: 8 oz of falafel, lettuce, tomato, pickled red onion, tzatziki, served on a brioche bun
My personal favorite is the Cowans’s Bacon Burger.

I also got their western sour beverage which was a nice compliment to the burger.
#4 Jim Dandy’s
Jim Dandy’s has been around since 1986 and has been a staple in Nutley ever since. On top of that, interestingly enough, the building they are located in is one of the oldest buildings in Nutley history. So not only are you getting good food, but you’re also taking in some of Nutley’s history (see old photo below).
Jim Dandy’s are known for their ribs and wings, but you can’t go wrong with their burgers either. They have a variety of burgers on the menu:
- Bangin BBQ Bacon Cheese Burger • $11.95
- 1/2 lb burger, cheddar, bacon, & BBQ sauce
- Black Jack Burger • $11.95
- 1/2 lb burger, pepper jack cheese, & bacon
- Wild Buffalo Burger • $11.95
- 1/2 lb burger mozz & wing sauce, side of bleu
- TexMex Burger • $11.95
- 1/2 lb burger w/ cheddar cheese, mozz cheese, jalapenos, onions, tomatoes.
Overall Rating: 8.8/10 – Whatever burger you choose from a plain cheeseburger to the wild buffalo burger, you will not be disappointed.
Recommendation: Split a rack of ribs with the person you go with!
